In other words - player knows that he has to do something in order to progress the story and player knows that it's going to have some bad consequences, but still player is forced to do it and watch how something horrific unfolds and how Rufus is still completely clueless about what happened. Every time you think Rufus might do something good for other people or the world, player is "forced" to do something bad instead - something that is generally more in-character but not something that player would normally like to do. Instead of progressing the story in predictable manner, where Rufus become more and more "good guy" as time goes on, writers decided to mock players and break fan-service storytelling. To add a bit to your comment on the story and likeability of Rufus I think that writing of Deponia is very unconventional and original - to the point that a lot of people find it weird and frustrating. Only play if you really want to see the other characters from previous games again. I felt like I wasted six hours playing it at the end. It's a self contained what-if scenario that does nothing to change or further the plot. It doesn't reach monkey island status, but it's still and enjoyable experience. It's a really similar game to monkey island in the puzzles, the humor, and the story. Overall, I recommend the games if you like humorous point and click adventures. I really wish there was at least some bit of character progression between games.

He goes through some character progression in the individual games, but at the beginning of the next game he is seemingly back to where he started. He's similar to guybrush threepwood in monkey island 2. But if you can't stand him in the first game, he doesn't really change through the rest of the series. The main character is incredibly unlikable, which is sort of explained late in the story. Just remember that the protagonist is egotistical and selfish, and has no problem harming others to progress the story. The game is mostly pretty easy, but there are a few frustrating puzzles that I ended up looking up a guide for, with solution not making sense until I finished (and sometimes not even then).

Many also make return appearances throughout the series. Each character you meet is unique, quirky, and as you travel through the series, you feel sympathetic towards them.

The strong point of the series are the characters and the dialogue. Oftentimes, each new location will leave you with nothing from the previous location so you start anew at each location. There are no Sierra moments where missing an item will screw you in with no point of returns. The series as a whole is a solid point and click adventure. Note: I don't believe the fourth one is included in this bundle, which story wise, I don't think it really adds much to the series. I've played through all four of the games so I figured I would give my opinion on the series.
